Light of the Jedi
Jun. 22nd, 2021 11:25 pmStar Wars: Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule
My Rating: ★★★★☆
This book feels like fanfiction, and I mean that in the best possible way: Soule's affection for the canon is palpable throughout. He gives a lot of attention to exploring Jedi culture (a perfect read for Jedi June!), and I know I'm going to be incorporating some of his ideas into my fic going forward. A lot of Star Wars authors – both in fic and in canon – have recently tended toward a skeptical, if not cynical, interpretation of the Jedi Order. That's not, objectively speaking, a bad thing - but as someone who reads/watches Star Wars for the Jedi, I enjoyed reading a story where the Jedi are unambiguously a force for good. I especially enjoyed seeing the Jedi in their customary role as peacekeepers, rather than struggling to adapt to a (quasi-)military role as we see happening in the Clone Wars.
Light of the Jedi is full of people forced into extraordinarily difficult circumstances finding strength and goodness they never knew they had. It's not a fluffy story – the death toll is, uh, somewhere in the billions – but it's definitely optimistic at its core.
A favorite quote:
Overall, I would certainly place Light of the Jedi in my top ten favorite Star Wars novels. I've already preordered the sequel – it's coming out June 29, and I can hardly wait!

Her lightsaber, ugly as it was, served as a perfect reflection of the great truth of the Force: no matter what a person was on the outside…
…inside, everyone was made of light.
