Fic posted in 2021:
March: Strays (Star Wars, 500 words)
May: In a Mirror, Darkly (Star Wars, 1.1k words)
September: Letters from Himring (Silmarillion, 5k words)
Total posted wordcount: 6.9k
Overall Thoughts:
School kept me very busy, so I didn't post very much, but I'm happy with what I did post: Comparing my fic from 2021 with things I'd written previously, I've grown a lot as a writer.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
My total posted wordcount for 2021 was almost exactly the same as from 2020 (7.1k). It's less than I'd hoped, but probably about what I should have expected.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Well, I did post (anonymously) a joke ficlet for the whole Winterblumensaat thing, which I definitely couldn't have predicted!
As far as fic I'm actually willing to post with my name on it goes, nothing's very surprising. "Strays" and "In a Mirror, Darkly" both feature Anakin heavily, which probably comes the closest just because I usually don't care much about him.
This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most:
I can't think of one theme tying it all together; I posted so few fics this year, and they're all pretty different.
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
"Letters from Himring," for sure! Definitely the best fic I've written to date, and it was a lot of fun. Super grateful to my artist
frog-in-a-pond for giving me the go-ahead to write weird academic pastiche!
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
As I mentioned above, "Letters from Himring" is a pretty weird fic – for one thing, literally 30% of the wordcount is in footnotes! I was very pleasantly surprised by how well it was received, so what I learned is that risks like that are worth taking.
My best story of this year:
Definitely "Letters from Himring."
My most popular story of this year:
"Letters from Himring": It had the most comments and kudos, and subjectively seems to have been the best-received :)
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
None of them! They were all pretty well-received, in some cases much more than I expected.
My least favorite story this year:
"Strays" – I don't dislike it, but I don't feel strongly about it, either.
Most fun story to write:
"Letters from Himring"!
Story with the sweetest moment:
Probably "Strays," which is unadulterated fluff.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
N/A – I didn't post anything but gen.
Darkest story:
Nothing truly dark; I guess "Letters from Himring" wins this one since it's heavily implied Maedhros tortured some captives (offscreen).
Most overdue:
A fic is never late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it is meant to.
Most eye roll-worthy title:
I'm not very good at titles, to be honest, and none of mine this year are great. "Letters from Himring" is probably the most lackluster.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
I suppose it would be "In a Mirror, Darkly" – I hadn't thought that much about Beru before, but I had to get into her head for this one. But it's not as though I had a very strong sense of her beforehand.
Hardest story to write:
"Letters from Himring," just because I hadn't written anything that long before.
Biggest Disappointment:
Having to default on my Yuletide assignment. I'm learning that Yuletide just isn't feasible while I'm in school, since the deadline is during exams.
Biggest Surprise:
How much folks liked "Letters from Himring"!
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
I think "Letters from Himring" makes it pretty obvious I've read and written a lot of academic papers in the humanities ;)
Favorite opening line:
"My esteemed Colleagues, and Scholars of all Lands and Future Ages,
It is my fervent hope that this small Book of Letters will prove to be of interest and of use to you." ("Letters from Himring")
Favorite closing line:
Weirdly, it's from my Winterblumensaat joke fic: "Who was Florientina – plain, awkward, fumbling Florientina – to stand in their way?" (The whole fic is very...overwrought.)
In conclusion:
The stats don't show the most important thing that changed for me as far as fic writing goes in 2021: community. I finally joined the Silmarillion Writers' Guild Discord server, and "Letters from Himring" could not possibly have come to be without the support I got from folks in the write-ins channel. Cheers to you all!
Fic-writing goals for 2022:
I'd like to top 10k total – ideally significantly more, but better to set modest goals.
More specifically, I want to:
(1) finish and post "eidolon" (the SWTOR fic I've posted snippets from on DW),
(2) write the Maglor-is-Saint-Magloire fic (which means finishing translating the "Vita Sancti Maglorii" first), and
(3) write another SWTOR fic set in the Oricon arc that I've been planning for a while.
