2022 AO3 Stats Wrap-Up
Slightly abridged version of the meme I did last year.
Fics posted in 2022:
January: Classical Reception, 700 words, Monty Python and the Holy Grail
March: On the Transmission of the Red Book of Westmarch, 1k words, Tolkien
July: nidicolous, 200 words, Tolkien
September: Deep Roots, 5k words, Tolkien
October: Lament for Halwen, 500 words, Tolkien
November: sorrow for sea-fare, 600 words, Tolkien; and stands yet the wallstone, 300 words, original work.
Total posted wordcount: 8.3k
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Less; I set a goal last year of publishing at least 10k and thought I could meet it. But this is still more than I've posted the past couple of years, which in both cases was around 7k.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Technically I did publish "Classical Reception" in January, but I'm certain that as of January 1 I didn't expect to be writing fic for Monty Python and the Holy Grail at all, and certainly not (kind of) smutty fic!
This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most:
2022's theme was "short and funky!" I only published two fics over 1k words, and one of those ("On the Transmission of the Red Book of Westmarch") barely cleared 1k. Although the bulk of my wordcount was "Deep Roots," which is pretty ordinary in structure and concept, I experimented a lot in the shorter fics. "sorrow for sea-fare" might demonstrate that the most – it was very fun to write, and I liked playing with the style and structure like that, but I definitely wouldn't write something like that in a longer format.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
"On the Transmission of the Red Book of Westmarch" (written for
worldbuildingex) felt like a big risk at the time – the fic is entirely academic pastiche, an in-universe discussion of the text's manuscript transmission history. I was worried no one would like it, but it was very well received! That experience really emboldened me to experiment more with the fics I wrote later in the year.
My best story of this year:
Possibly "Lament for Halwen" – but maybe that's just because of
fiona15351's art, lol!
My most popular story of this year:
Mystifyingly, "On the Transmission of the Red Book of Westmarch." (I love this fandom!)
Most fun story to write:
"Lament for Halwen" –
fiona15351 and I collaborated, and it was a blast!
Story with the sweetest moment:
"nidicolous" has some pretty cute moments with El & El and their birb and star parents.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
"Classical Reception"...since it's the only story with any sex in it.
Darkest story:
"Lament for Halwen." Kinslaying!
Most overdue:
"Lament for Halwen," which started life as a B2MeM fic and was finally posted in October.
Most eye roll-worthy title:
"nidicolous." Hit the exchange deadline, didn't have a title, picked a relevant but obscure word, wound up looking laughably pretentious.
Hardest story to write:
"Deep Roots" fought me the whole way, and unfortunately I think it shows.
Biggest Disappointment:
The recipients of two of my exchange fics this year didn't comment. I felt happy with the fics, but I still would have liked to know what they thought and if the work was appreciated.
Biggest Surprise:
How much people liked "On the Transmission of the Red Book of Westmarch"!
Favorite opening line:
From "stands yet the wallstone":
Favorite closing line:
Absolutely the final exchange in "Classical Reception", which was arguably the raison d'être for the fic as a whole:
In conclusion:
Even though I didn't meet my wordcount goal, or post any of the specific projects I'd planned to finish, I'm satisfied with what I wrote and posted this year. I had a good time, and I'm looking forward to another year of fic writing!
Fic-writing goals for 2023:
I set some specific goals last year, and accomplished none of them. For 2023, it's just: Write fic! Even if it's bad! Post at least some of it!

This was a new state of affairs, and the city was still getting used to it.

I don’t set myself goals like that, mainly because I’m still surprised that I’m writing fic at all. XD So I’m just “going with the flow” and see what I’ll be able to write. My goal is to finish the three main WIPs I’ve got currently, and then we’ll see.
So of course I find your goal for this year very good! ;D Just write, see what happens, see what sparks your interest or inspiration, and I’m sure you’ll have a good outcome at the end of the year!
the fic is entirely academic pastiche, an in-universe discussion of the text's manuscript transmission history. I was worried no one would like it, but it was very well received!
That’s so cool, that you tried something like that, being so worried about the reception, and then people really enjoyed it! I’ve read some fics that are entirely made up of articles, letters etc. and it’s such an interesting format!
The recipients of two of my exchange fics this year didn't comment.
Oh no. :( That’s so disappointing! Even if they didn’t like what you wrote, I’d at least expect some kind of acknowledgement or some thanks for the work you put it. I did see one or two people mention though that they at some point forgot to comment on gift fics even though they loved them. Just a case of reading it at a time where they didn’t really have time to comment on it because they felt that they wanted to leave a longer comment, and then something was going on RL and it slipped their mind. They felt bad about it and commented super late on it when they finally realized. Stuff like that happens of course, but it’s still a bummer for the writer who is left hanging.
