Two recently discovered favorites, one for the Silmarillion and the other for Avatar: The Last Airbender.

annunciation by elftrash
Fandom: Silmarillion
Characters: primarily Maedhros and Maglor, a bit of Caranthir and Fingon
Ships: Fingon/Maedhros, though it's definitely not the focus
Word Count: 6k
Author's Summary: Eru moves to make light out of darkness, to take wrong and make right, to weave new harmonies out of dissonance.

Or: Beleriand has driven them all a little mad, Angband or not.

Note: It's a Gil-galad origin fic, but far from a typical example of the subgenre. The fic centers around implied mpreg, something I am usually not into at all, but it's in large part an examination of Maedhros' messed-up mental state and Maglor's relationship with his older brother, with a bit of theology, too. The author's portrayals of Maedhros and Maglor have really affected my own conception of the characters - the characterizations in this fic are complex, subtle, and heartbreaking.

ribs by ohmygodwhy
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Characters: Aang, Zuko
Ships: None
Word Count: 4k
Author's Summary: The first thing Zuko tells him during their first lesson after the whole Sun Warrior ruins ordeal, is “Fire comes from the breath.”

a lesson in learning, and re-learning.

Note: I have re-read this fic at LEAST half a dozen times since I discovered it, and WOW. The characterizations of both Aang and Zuko are phenomenal - they are both awkward little turtleducks in the best possible way. More sweet than bitter, in the end, but certainly poignant.

Oh, I do love me a good Maglor-and-Maedhros dynamic.
